SHILLONG, Nov 10: The Indian Institute of Sustainability (IIS), Meghalaya, will be established in Shillong jointly by the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and Gujarat University.
The decision was taken by NEHU and Gujarat University after they signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a mutually beneficial relationship based on academic and scientific cooperation and to establish collaborative programmes and other academic exchanges.
The two universities have agreed to establish a strong relationship of academic collaboration by undertaking joint responsibilities and activities in their respective fields which include research, innovation, resources, knowledge and training, and capacity building.
While exchanging the MoU, it was decided that IIS Meghalaya will be established in Shillong jointly, with the IIS Gujarat and NEHU being the main shareholders.
Under joint courses programmes, areas of Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Value Chain and Bamboo Technology will be of core focus. Vice Chancellor of NEHU Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla has suggested an International Cultural Exchange Programme where students of various countries can participate.
The MoU will promote joint research and academic programmes, organise seminars, workshops, outreach programmes, faculty exchanges, and joint supervision of research scholars, according to a statement issued here.
It will also facilitate the faculties of both the universities in applying for national and international funding for research projects.
Both the universities will also collaborate to exchange honorary/adjunct professorship or visiting fellow/professor for mutual support to access the facilities available for academic programme, research activities and outreach programme. Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University, Prof. Himanshu Pandya, has, meanwhile, invited the NEHU VC to establish a Bamboo House in Gujarat University, which would enable the research on bamboo technology.
In response to the invitation, Prof Shukla invited the VC of Gujarat University to establish a Gujarat Bhawan in NEHU Campus.
Gujarat University also appointed Prof Shukla as distinguished professor at Indian Institute Sustainability, Gujarat University.
