Tura college observes World Diabetes Day

TURA, Nov 14: In a bid to spread awareness on diabetes among the residents of Chunmati and Sangsanggre, the College of Community Science, Tura on Monday organised an awareness programme cum diabetes detection drive here.
Conducted under the aegis of the college’s Food Science and Nutrition department, the programme was based on this year’s theme “Access to Diabetes Education.”
The programme began with the release of pamphlets by Dean, Dr Jyoti V Vastrad, who emphasised on the importance of early detection and good nutritional support for the management of diabetes.
The medical wing of the college contributed to the cause of the programme as they aided in the detection of diabetes.
Assistant Professor Dr Natasha R Marak discussed nutrition education with the attendants in the local language as she spoke about myths on local as well as on ways to manage blood glucose levels using the food products available in the region.
Professor Dr Namita Singh highlighted alarming statistics on the status of diabetes in India and how India has come to be known as ‘the diabetes capital of the world.’
As part of the awareness programme, students of the college also assessed the Body Mass Index (BMI) of the participants.
