SHILLONG, Dec 4: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) War Jaintia circle, KSU West Jaintia Hills district and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) Southern Riwar circle on Saturday halted the ongoing fencing along the international border at Rongkum-Amlympiang.
In a statement here on Sunday, the groups informed that they have also asked the workers of the company to leave the village till their demand to erect the border fencing from the zero line is complied with.
Informing that they are against the fencing along the international border between India and Bangladesh in War Jaintia area till it is erected on the zero line, they said, “We will not accept that the border fencing is erected 150 yards inside the zero line since the local villagers will be losing a major chunk of their land, especially their agricultural land.”
The groups also slammed local MLA and Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui for reportedly giving the nod for the border fencing despite opposition from the people.
“We had expected that he (Rymbui) will remain firm since he had committed during 2018 Assembly polls that he will ensure that not an inch of the land of people of Meghalaya will go to Bangladesh,” they said, demanding that the government pull the plug on the fencing work by scrapping the order.
