Celebration of World Soil Day in KVKs

SHILLONG, Dec 5: World Soil Day was celebrated across Indian College of Agricultural Research – Krishi Vigyan Kendra (ICAR- KVK) located in Ri-Bhoi, West Khasi Hills, and Jaintia Hills.
In Ri-Bhoi, a one-day awareness programme on ‘Natural Farming and Soil Health’ was organised by the institute on Monday with the aim to create awareness and enhance knowledge among farmers on soil health, benefits of soil health cards, management of soil acidity and degradation for sustainability of soil, which would lead to the enhancement of soil fertility and crop productivity.
The programme was attended by 50 farmers from the district.
In West Khasi Hills, a programme was held at the KVK West Khasi Hills campus wherein deliberations over the origin of the World Soil Day celebration were witnessed.
Meanwhile, at the office premises of KVK, Wahaijer, Jaintia Hills, the event witnessed discussions on the degradation of soil and the essentialness of following sustainable soil management methods, and a host of other subjects which revolved on the theme ‘Soil-Where Food Begins’.
