SHILLONG, Dec 22: The Shillong Press Club (SPC), which was functioning from a rented accommodation, has got a permanent office at the DIPR complex, Lachumiere.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated it at a programme on Thursday.
The SPC is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It felicitated its founding and senior members to mark the occasion.
Addressing a gathering, Sangma said the permanent infrastructure will help boost the functioning of journalists in the state. He said it was a long-felt need of the journalists.
“This infrastructure will ensure a working system on how the press club should function. This is an important milestone to bring about stability in the overall functioning of the club,” Sangma said.
He said the inauguration of the new office was possible due to the special attention given by Information and Public Relations (IPR) Minister James PK Sangma. He said the IPR Minister pushed all limits to ensure that this permanent office is officially inaugurated.
Meanwhile, the CM advised media persons to maintain balance in their reports.
“It is important to have a cross-checking mechanism since the role of the media is very critical. We need to ensure that things move in the right direction. The media is given its importance and always taken in a positive way,” he said.
He said in some cases, there are reports which tend to have deviation.
“It is not always easy since there will always be problems and challenges. What is important is to keep the larger goal in mind,” Sangma added.
Others present on the occasion included Commissioner and Secretary of IPR, Pravin Bakshi; Secretary IPR, Israel Ingty; IPR Director, Malthaus Sangma; senior Press Council of India member Jaishankar Gupta, SPC president, David Laitphlang and SPC general secretary, Powell Sohkhlet.
