SHILLONG, Dec 24: After the letter from a top Assam police official seeking details on religious conversion, and number of churches stoked fresh controversy, the Opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday went for the BJP’s jugular while alleging that is the BJP is trying to disrupt peaceful Christmas celebrations and that overall it is an attempt to suppress Christian fate across the country.
“It is a Christmas gift by the BJP to the Christians across the country. We have recently seen reports of how Christian minorities in various states across the country have been treated. …this is one of the agendas fulfilled by the BJP,” said Opposition Chief Whip George B Lyngdoh while reacting to the letter by SP of the Assam Police Special Branch seeking key information on religious conversion and number of churches in the state of Assam.
“Now that it has strengthened its hold in Northeast through Assam, they are completing their own agenda and action by trying to make inroads into all the districts and trying to find how much Christianity has spread. Now they are trying to suppress the Christian fate across the country,” he said. “I would say it is a Christmas gift by the BJP to us Christians”.
On the State BJP’s secular image, he said, “The BJP leaders of Meghalaya are yet to understand they have a negligible number in Parliament. There are only two Lok Sabha MPs and one Rajya Sabha MP in Meghalaya. We are insignificant when it comes to numbers that make up the government and also the Parliament in Delhi.”
“Whatever the BJP is trying to do it is just portrayed as they are trying to make inroads into the state by getting a few leaders here and there and at the same time trying to portray across the country that they have penetrated Meghalaya by not only having a government for the past five years but also that some more leaders have joined the BJP,” he added.
He further said, “So in one way, it is a narrative, a kind of advertisement that the BJP is accepted even in Christian-dominated states like Meghalaya. But in fact, it is only to fulfill their non-secular and divisive agenda”.
