SHILLONG, Dec 26: The Meghalaya Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday accused the NPP-led MDA Government of surrendering to Delhi and Assam and allowing it to be remote controlled from there.
Referring to the statement of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma during the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the city, TMC Meghalaya spokesperson George B Lyngdoh said the CM had mentioned that his government was ready to support the PM’s dreams and aspirations for the Northeast.
“This shows the weakness of the state government,” Lyngdoh said.
The Umroi legislator further slammed the ruling coalition for its failure to follow up on the Mukroh firing incident that led to the death of six people including five from Meghalaya.
Lyngdoh said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe into the incident was mere eyewash.
According to him, the FIR should have been filed in Meghalaya and the culprits should have been booked and warrant should have been issued against them.
“But the state government come up with the SIT and we already know the outcome of such an investigation,” he said.
TMC national spokesperson Saket Gokhale also slammed the state government for not fighting for the sake of the Mukroh victims.
Gokhale referred to the statement of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the Assam Legislative Assembly that the brutal killing of five Meghalaya residents by Assam Police personnel was an “act of self-defense against miscreants”.
“This statement was made while the probe is still ongoing and the case filed by the TMC with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is still pending,” Gokhale said, adding that the Assam CM’s statement was an act of rubbing salt on wounds.
Complaining of the lack of inaction by the MDA Government, he said that the Meghalaya government has restrained the police from arresting those responsible for the murders. “The MDA Government made a show of doing something to pacify the people of Meghalaya but took zero concrete action,” he said. Gokhale went on to say that the Assam CM remote controls the MDA Government. “This is the reason why Chief Minister Conrad Sangma chose to appeal for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s intervention in the matter rather than empower the Meghalaya police to take action. Policing is a state subject, and yet, the CM has turned to his remote controllers in Delhi and Guwahati instead of taking firm action.”
