SHILLONG, Dec 27: The National People’s Party (NPP) has slammed the attempts by political leaders and parties to score brownie points on communal lines and asserted that no political party should be allowed to get into communal arguments especially before an election.
“I saw the letter being circulated on social media. I don’t know whether one should comment on such a circulation. The point is that Meghalaya is already on election mode,” newly-elected NPP spokesperson Ampareen Lyngdoh said while reacting to comments of political leaders in the state on a letter circulated by the SP Special Branch of Assam asking for the details of conversion and the number of Churches in Assam which the Assam CM has disassociated himself from.
Following this, the Meghalaya unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleged that sleuths of the Intelligence Bureau are monitoring the Christian leaders and activities in the state.
“If you are asking me whether or not BJP is trying to further its agenda on this movement across the country, then I think it is a general pattern across the country and discussing it in Meghalaya at this point of time would mean indulging in the communal angle,” she said.
Stating that elections are won on merits and debates during the electioneering period, Lyngdoh said, “Focus should be on issues that affect people.”
