SHILLONG, Dec 30: United Democratic Party working president, Paul Lyngdoh on Friday hinted that his party was virtually without power despite being a part of the ruling coalition headed by the National People’s Party (NPP).
He also said that the state government’s role in the Mukroh incident has been trivial.
“Whatever has been done so far is so inconsequential that it does not seem like the government is really putting its foot down on the Mukroh incident,” he said about the follow-up action by the state government on the incident.
“We have people in the office but they are not in power,” he added.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday told the Assembly that the police firing in Mukroh along the boundary with Meghalaya in November was an act of self-defence and to protect government properties.
It was on November 22 that six people, including five Meghalaya residents and a forest guard from Assam, were killed in the Mukroh incident. The five Meghalaya residents were shot by the Assam police within the boundary of Meghalaya.
Soon after the incident, the Conrad K. Sangma government decided to put up BOPs along the sensitive border areas, constituted a judicial enquiry headed by Justice T. Vaiphei and said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured a probe into the firing by a central investigation agency.
Sarma’s assertion in the Assam Assembly was, however, contrary to his assurance of cooperation in ensuring justice for those killed.
