SHILLONG, Jan 4: Meghalaya, which is expected to go to Assembly elections in February, has over 21 lakh voters.
The electoral rolls for the Special Summary Revision (SSR), 2023 will be published on Thursday. The SSR-2023 commenced on November 9 with the state-level launch of the draft publication of electoral rolls.
Official sources said altogether 63,763 new electors had applied for enrollment through Form 6 during the just-concluded SSR exercise. However, the net addition post-hearing of claims and objections was 49,915.
Currently, the state has 21,61,129 voters – 10,68,801 of them males and 10,92,326 females. There are also two transgenders. The overall number includes 3,844 service electors. There is a net increase of 2.36% in the current number of electorates over the draft rolls as on November 9, 2022.
Ensuring the purity of electoral rolls is a major focus of the Election Commission of India. Factoring it, 13,848 electors were removed from the electoral rolls due to reasons such as death, shifting of address etc.
Also, the particulars of 40,700 electors were corrected in this revision. The SSR process was guided by the principles of ensuring purity, health, inclusiveness, integrity and transparency.
Periodic meetings were held at the levels of CEO and DCs with all political parties to ensure transparency in the SSR process. Inclusiveness was given a special focus and as an outcome, the number of People with Disabilities enrolled stands at 7,478.
Compared to the 2018 figures, the total number of electorates registered an increase of 18%, with 4,29,062 new electors being added. Currently, the EP ratio stands at 64.53%, gender ratio (female : male) is 1022, and enrollment of people in the 18-19 age groups is 81,443.
The total number of polling stations increased to 3,482 from 3,083 in 2018.
