MAWKYRWAT, Jan 10: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday promised to revamp the education system in the state if his party is voted to power in the upcoming assembly elections.
He also spoke about state government’s focus on education in rural areas of the state.
Tynsong’s comments came during an inaugural event of RUSA Building at Sngap Syiem College at Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills.
“The state government will try its level best to bring in reforms within the education sector in the years to come. We want to ensure the spread of education in district and sub-divisional headquarters. Our focus is not just Shilling but rural areas of the state. Plans are afoot to improve the education sector if we are voted to power again,” Tynsong said.
Mawkyrwat MLA and PHE Minister Renikton L Tongkhar and principal of Sngap Syiem College Dr. KK Nongsiej were among others present at the event.
Nongsiej informed that the building was constructed at the cost of Rs 1.40 crore.
It was funded under RUSA 1.0 Infrastructure Grant to the college in 2017-18.
The college was also provided another Rs 60 lakh for procurement which includes computers and furniture.
He also said that the college got another scheme of Rs 4 crore funded under RUSA 2.0. Eighty per cent portion was constructed till now. The rest would be completed within next few months.
Before attending the function, the deputy chief minister, who visited Mawkyrwat to declare that the Sngap Syiem College has been upgraded to “People’s College”, handed over the official notification of the upgrade to Nongsiej.
Tynsong expressed his happiness over the ongoing work, saying that Sngap Syiem College, the only college in South West Khasi Hills District, kept on growing every day in 2022.
“It has got B-Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC),” he said.
The deputy chief minister along with the PHE minister also launched the fundraising drive of the college for the construction of the multipurpose hall at Sngap Syiem College.
