SHILLONG, Jan 11: The state cabinet on Wednesday approved the Meghalaya Tourism Policy 2023 in a bid to provide a much-need fillip to the state’s tourism sector.
Elucidating further, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed that the tourism policy was last made in 2011 and since then, a lot has happened in the tourism sector, thereby bringing out the need for a detailed and contemporary policy.
He said the new policy would give proper shape and structure to the tourism sector by looking into various aspects such as sustainability, employment generation, entrepreneurship, community participation, usage of technology, livelihood and sustainability, etc.
The chief minister argued that in order to achieve these goals, focus needs to be laid on certain areas such as better infrastructure as well as safety of tourists.
During the day, the cabinet also approved the State Organic and Farming Policy, Meghalaya Advertisement Policy 2023 and Drug Reduction Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM).
Meanwhile referring to State Organic and Farming Policy, Conrad said the idea was to get a proper organic-structured system certification, which, he said, would provide a complete structure to move forward the organic mission.
With regard to Drug Reduction and Elimination and Action Mission, he said the mission was to ensure all the aspects of substance abuse were taken up in a structured and mission-mode manner.
He informed that all different departments would be taken into confidence and aspects of rehabilitation, counselling and working with the Police department have been worked out in detail to achieve the goal of making Meghalaya drug-free.
