SHILLONG, Jan 13: Raising the temperature further on the State BJP, the Congress on Friday attacked the saffron party accusing them of poaching or threatening MLAs of different parties to join them.
Terming the BJP as the biggest pollutant of India’s democracy, All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) senior observer for Meghalaya, Mukul Wasnik said, “BJP has decided to field candidates in Meghalaya. It is their right but I am afraid to say that they are the biggest pollutant in the Indian democracy.”
In recent memory, the BJP has managed to find its place in few of the Northeastern states and is also a part of the government, Wasnik said.
Talking about BJP’s “type of politics”, he said, “If they get the majority in elections, well and good; they will form the government. And if they don’t get the majority, they will try to buy MLAs from other parties; not only buying MLAs, but also threatening them and by all means they will try to get a majority. This is what we have seen”.
Recalling how Pema Khandu served as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh under the emblem of three parties in a span of five months, the Congress leader said, “I don’t believe it might have happened anywhere in the world, but because of the BJP, this has happened in Arunachal Pradesh”.
“What happened in Manipur, Goa Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and everywhere, solely BJP has polluted Indian democracy like anything and that is a threat to our democracy,” he added.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president, Vincent H Pala took a jibe at the BJP stating that the party is well-versed with drama, propaganda and advertisement.
“BJP as usual is very good in drama, propaganda and advertisement. If you observe, entire Shillong is painted with BJP but when it comes to votes, they do not have enough candidates,” Pala said.
Maintaining that people trust Congress, which is why the party does not opt for exaggerated publicity, the MPCC chief said, “Our work and ideology is enough, it is in the heart and blood of the people and the only thing we have to give them is trusted and reliable politicians”.
