SHILLONG, Jan 13: Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar has blamed political parties such as Trinamool Congress (TMC) for trying to create a division between the BJP and the Christians.
He said this after refusing to comment on the recent letter issued by Assam police seeking a probe into the activities of Christians in the neighbouring state.
Chandrasekhar said he was not aware of the letter but sniffed “a desperate strategy” by some political parties to alienate the Christian community from the BJP.
Claiming that the Christians for BJP are like any other community the party serves, he urged voters not to fall prey to the poison being spread by the TMC and other parties as they don’t have anything to compare themselves with what the BJP has done in the last 5-8 years.
The minister said the BJP considers all citizens as equals and no government scheme has discriminated against anyone on the basis of religion, caste and community.
Despite being in power since 2014, the BJP failed to secure double-digit seats in Meghalaya in 2018.
Chandrasekhar indicated things could be different this time as the party has laid out a roadmap of development for the people.
Slamming the NPP-led government in the state for taking the credit for different central schemes, he said there are many CMs and political parties who have nothing to show but often bask in the reflected glory of the work ensured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He credited Modi with bringing development to Meghalaya.
Chandrasekhar, however, refused to comment on whether the BJP would continue with its current partners, in view of the corruption charges against the MDA, if it is in a position to form the next government.
