SHILLONG, Jan 17: It is often said that when you smell tar, it means elections are approaching.
With Meghalaya bracing for Assembly elections, the state government is trying its best to woo voters. A visit to different areas of Shillong would reveal development of some sorts taking place.
Recently, workers were seen re-laying a stretch of the Jowai-Shillong Road although the condition of the road at other stretches, including Jowai Bypass, is worse.
Another work initiated is the construction of Smart Roads in Lachumiere area. The entire road has been dug to pave the way for the construction.
Work is also underway in parts of Laitumkhrah constituency for the development of the drainage system. Tiles are also being laid in nearby areas. The pavements from Polo to Pynthorumkhrah got the tiles recently.
Some residents said the junction improvement work near the CRPF camp in Polo resumed all of a sudden after a gap of some years.
The streetlights, which remained non-functional in many localities of Shillong and thoroughfares, have been made functional.
Such activities ahead of elections are not new. The ruling MDA is only following in the footsteps of previous governments in the state.
