SHILLONG, Jan 29: In a setback for the NPP, former Assembly Speaker Martin M Danggo has decided to contest the February 27 polls on a BJP ticket instead of the NPP.
The NPP had announced Danggo as the party candidate from Ranikor constituency.
As per reports, Danggo took the decision after meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Saturday in the presence of former Cabinet minister and party MLA AL Hek.
BJP sources revealed that the state leaders were in talks with Danggo for the past several days.
The sources said he will resign from the NPP on Monday.
It is, however, not clear whether Danggo will join the saffron party in Shillong or Delhi.
The sources said the BJP was confident about Danggo’s prospect in Ranikor.
