TURA, Jan 30: In a blow to the Congress in Garo Hills, its leader from Kharkutta, Omilo K Sangma resigned from the party and joined the BJP along with 38 party workers and supporters in Tura on Monday.
Sangma was welcomed into the party by BJP state vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak in presence of Assam Deputy Speaker Numal Momin.
Speaking following his joining the BJP, Sangma said that they decided to join the BJP with the belief that it is the only party that can rid the state and the country of corruption. “We were in the Congress for many years but it was never free from corruption. That is why I, my colleagues and many party workers resigned en masse yesterday to join the BJP. We tried to assess which party will bring development and be free from corruption. It was a collective decision and we all believe that it is only the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah that can end corruption. Keeping this in mind, we all joined the BJP,” the former Congress member said.
Meanwhile, Assam Deputy Speaker, Numal Momin, while lauding Omilo for joining the party said that members of different political parties were joining the party believing in Prime Minister Modi’s right intent to work for the poor people.
He added that it is high time for the people to decide whether they want a pro-development party and a party which can work for the poorest of the poor, or a party which has neglected the people for so long.
“People in Meghalaya and Garo Hills in particular want change now. That is why they are resigning from their respective parties and joining the BJP,” Momin said.
He pointed out that even 50 years after Meghalaya attained statehood, there is no medical college, engineering college or even a state university in Meghalaya.
“People have been neglected and deprived of many schemes of the Modi government. If the BJP comes to power, we will work for the people from day one. We will construct one medical college, one engineering college and a state university. That is our dream. We will deliver what we have promised,” Momin assured.
It may be noted that Chireng Peter R Marak is Congress’ candidate for Kharkutta.
