SHILLONG, Feb 1: Battleground Pynthorumkhrah — once anticipated as one of the most interesting electoral battles is nearing its destiny as Meghalaya goes to polls on February 27, and NPP’s Rocky Hek has exuded confidence in his candidature to deny his uncle AL Hek, five-time Pynthorumkhrah MLA, a sixth term.
Rocky Hek, who filed his nomination papers on Wednesday, was accompanied by family members and supporters.
Vowing to defeat AL Hek, Rocky said, “We are hundred per cent confident to win as the constituency needs a change.”
What has remained contentious is Rocky’s decision to contest polls against his kin. But in his defence, the NPP candidate says it was the people’s wishes.
Training his guns on the BJP legislator, Rocky drew parallels between Pynthorumkhrah and South Shillong constituencies, stating that the latter has seen relatively more development while being represented by another BJP MLA, Sanbor Shullai.
Many developmental works were undertaken in Laban but there was none in Pynthorumkhrah, he alleged.
He also pointed out that youths are turning to drugs as they are derived of proper employment.
“I assure (you) that if I am elected, I will do whatever it takes to get rid of the drug menace which nobody is talking about and to uplift the livelihood of the people of the constituency,” he said, while lamenting lack of proper roads, streetlights, and more.
