SHILLONG, Feb 3: Facing repeated criticism over allegations of distribution of cash in Nongkrem, NPP candidate Dasakhiatbha Lamare on Friday vehemently defended himself, saying that he helped people throughout the last five years and not only before elections.
Speaking to media persons after filing his nomination here, Lamare said most candidates help their own people and allegations that candidates are influencing voters with money are misleading.
“We don’t keep records while helping people. We do it as per out limit and the will of the people not only in our constituency but even extend help to people in others constituencies without any calculation,” he said.
Asked why help was provided to people only during elections, he said he helped people for five years but the matter was being highlighted because of elections.
Expressing confidence that he would get the support of the people in Nongkrem after shifting from Mawhati, Lamare said he would work day and night for the people of Nongkrem like what he had done in Mawhati.
Lamare also rejected claims that people of Mawhati had rejected him due to which he had shifted base to Nongkrem.
He said his brother-in-law is contesting from Mawhati.
On the criticism over entry of businessmen into politics, he said it is the right of the people to choose whatever they want.
Dasakhiat has assets over Rs 45 crore
Lamare, who is often seen driving in town on his Lamborghini, is among the richest candidates in fray for the February 27 Assembly polls.
The affidavit filed by Lamare on Friday reveals that the gross total value of his moveable assets has more than doubled from Rs 4.01 crore in 2018 to Rs 8.56 crore.
The movable assets include 15 vehicles including a BMW Z4 worth Rs 72 lakh. However, the affidavit does not mention the super-luxury Lamborghini car.
The gross total value of all his immovable assets has increased from Rs 36.36 crore in 2018 to Rs 37.29 crore.
Lamare has passed CBSE Class XII (Commerce) from Pestle Weed College, Dehradun.
