SHILLONG, Feb 5: The Opposition TMC on Sunday censured the BJP for its anti-minority policies and the growing oppression against Christians in neighbouring Assam ruled by the saffron party.
“The BJP has constantly shown its aggressiveness against the minorities in an attempt to push the Hindutva agenda across the country. They have constantly failed to subscribe to the values and ethos of the Constitution and there is growing apprehension over the kind of policies subscribed at the Centre and their repercussions in both Assam and Meghalaya,” TMC vice president George B Lyngdoh said.
Referring to numerous instances of alleged atrocities against the minorities, especially Christians in Assam, Lyngdoh said the minorities including Christians have not been shown any respect either by the BJP government at the Centre or the NPP-BJP government in Meghalaya.
Cementing his case, Lyngdoh said the BJP does not care about the rights and sentiments of the people in Meghalaya as was evident when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state on a Sunday last year to inaugurate roads and bridges and also to address a rally, knowing very well that Christians consider Sunday as the day of Sabbath.
He appealed people to fight such atrocities and oppression and unite together irrespective of caste, creed or religion to secure the rights enshrined in the Constitution.
“We also appeal to all citizens of the country to stand for the oppressed and the poor and ensure our unity so that one religion may stand for another to protect their mutual interests,” he added.
