AIU East Zone Inter University Handball Tournament concludes successfully

Guwahati, Feb 7 : The four-day-long East Zone Inter University Handball (Men)Tournament 2022-23 concludes today at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) campus with much enthusiasm as the host university team has been qualified to play in the AIU (Association of Indian Universities) Nationals competition this year. Altogether 27 universities from the East Zone played in this tournament.

The zonal-level tournament was organised by USTM under the aegis of the AIU, New Delhi.
The prizes were handed over to the players by Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM in the
presence of Dr R K Sharma, Advisor, USTM, Rajeev Kumar Singh, Director Project and
Sustainable Development, USTM; Vincent Khyriem, Vice-President, Meghalaya Handball
Association; Nabelmoon Thaba, Hony. General secretary, Meghalaya Handball Association,
officials, referees, coaches, managers and teams from the participating universities.

The Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University Jaunpur team was the winner of the
tournament and the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith University Varanasi was the runner-
up. The third position went to the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya, while
Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University Raipur was placed in fourth.

Addressing the players, Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque said that the University is emphasising
the development of sports along with academics. “I am happy to inform you that USTM has
recently acquired 100 acres of land to develop a Sports Village. We will be promoting all
kinds of games played in the region which are mostly neglected. We want to promote sports
in the coming days, it is a part of our mission.”, he said.

Thanking the USTM authorities for organising the competitions amidst a beautiful
environment and infrastructure, Nabelmoon Thaba from Meghalaya Handball Association
said, “I want to congratulate the winning team and all the participating teams for making this
tournament a success”.

All the referees and team managers were felicitated by USTM in the valedictory function
today.
