SHILLONG, Feb 6: The NPP on Monday said the people will judge the UDP for badmouthing the very MDA Government that it was a part and parcel of.
The UDP should remember it has cabinet ministers in the NPP-led government, the party said.
This statement of the NPP was in response to Sawkmie’s statement that the NPP has misruled the state and he is in no way in favour of forging an alliance with the party which is fighting a negative wave. “Bah PT Sawkmie statement against our party is very unfortunate because in this MDA government, we have a Home minister, Water Resources minister, Social Welfare and Excise minister and Speaker are from UDP in the MDA government. Till today, we are still in a coalition,” NPP spokesperson Bajop Pyngrope said.
He said, “May be he has come up with personal statement made against the NPP. I don’t know if he is an official spokesperson of that party but I have not seen the party president using such words or making allegations”.
He further said, “We won’t take one man’s statement as the party stand. If it comes out from the mouth of the UDP president or official spokesperson, we could have taken his comments seriously. We won’t have to give importance to his comments”.
Pyngrope continued, “We will not speak badly about anybody but people of the state will see and judge people as they are not fools. They know who is blaming whom and who is doing what.”
He also observed that these are mere accusations brought by the UDP candidate to gain an upper hand in his constituency.
Responding to Sawkmie’s claim that there is a negative wave against the NPP, he said, “The response is immense for NPP. The party candidates are lucky as they are enjoying a wave for the party across the state”.
Pyngrope said, unlike other parties, the NPP has not fielded candidates for the sake of fielding them in 57 constituencies.
“We have dynamic leaders from all over the state as the chief minister is from Garo Hills and deputy chief minister is from Khasi Hills. There are so many leaders and we have chosen popular and winnable candidates,” he added.
He claimed good support for NPP. “I have travelled to attend so many meetings from one constituency to another. I found the support immense. Even NPP candidates can spring a surprise in some constituencies where it had no presence. This time, it will be a big surprise which is going to be in our favour after March 2,” Pyngrope summed up.
NPP spokesperson Ampareen Lyngdoh also buttressed Pyngrope’s remark, saying NPP’s partners in the MDA cannot shy away from their responsibility.
“Collective responsibility should be assigned to all partners of the MDA and whether it is good or bad, everything comes in the same basket,” she said.
Lyngdoh predicted that in case any party fails to secure absolute majority, then the same partners would come together to form a post-poll coalition.
“At the end of the day, the public is aware of the partnership which we had collectively initiated,” she said, adding that coalition partners slamming each other during elections was commonplace in Meghalaya.
