SHILLONG, Feb 16: The NPP on Thursday stated that the TMC will be thoroughly embarrassed for tall talk as it is a party that belongs to West Bengal and not Meghalaya.
“Just wait for March 2,” NPP spokesperson and Williamnagar MLA, Marcuise N Marak said while reacting to the prediction of TMC’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will lose his South Tura seat.
Banerjee also said the NPP will draw a blank in the Garo Hills region encompassing 24 Assembly seats.
“That is a statement of a totally frustrated person. It is actually the other way around. The NPP is winning big and they are the ones losing,” Marak said.
He asserted interactions with the people on the streets, as is being done by various news outlets, would prove that Banerjee’s prediction was awry.
“Conrad Sangma is winning 100%, no doubt about it. Abhishek Banerjee has given a statement without understanding the feelings of the people in the Garo Hills,” he added.
On the TMC leader’s rally in Williamnagar, Marak said the ‘Bengal party’ pulled in the crowd from other districts and even Assam. Very few people from Williamnagar participated, he claimed.
“We saw a lot of outsiders here. People from Assam were also brought here to attend the meeting. The people of Williamnagar were practically not there,” he asserted.
He claimed he was aware of the development as the public meeting was held in front of the NPP office.
NPP spokesperson Bajop Pyngrope also hit out at the TMC leader, saying the leaders and people who have joined the party from West Bengal, would soon leave them.
Reacting to Banerjee’s plea to the electors to vote for Mamata Banerjee, he said the TMC leader’s comment did not surprise him.
“TMC is indeed a Bengal-based party. We all have seen what happened in states such as Tripura where people joined them but left immediately after the election. I believe due to the evident outcome of the Meghalaya TMC’s misadventure, they are baffled and are asking people to vote for Mamata Banerjee,” he said.
Pyngrope insisted that voting for Mamata Banerjee would not be a good proposition for the people of Meghalaya even as he referred to a video on social media saying the West Bengal CM is not even aware of the names of the tribes in the state.
Stating that the NPP has created such a reputation that even the principal opposition party in the Assembly is happy, Pyngrope said they are making people aware of the dangers of associating with the TMC.
He said the TMC may lure people with “unrealistic” promises of cash transfer and employment and seek votes in the name of Mamata Banerjee but not a single person will vote for it.
“Do you know Mamata Banerjee was herself defeated in West Bengal and she had to wait for a bye-election to get elected? If people of West Bengal did not vote for her, imagine who will vote for her in Meghalaya, Tripura and other states,” he added.
