NONGSTOIN, Feb 22: VPP chief Ardent Basaiawmoit campaigned for party candidate from Nongstoin, Bobby Kharshandi, in a bid to propel his candidature to a win in the February 27 Meghalaya elections.
Before the campaign, a public rally was taken out from Nongstoin Post Office to Nongstoin market, where a public meeting was held.
In his address, Basaiawmoit highlighted some of the important issues which prompted him to float a new political party along with other like-minded leaders.
Training his guns on the NPP, the VPP chief alleged that corruption has led the state to its downfall turning it into one of the poorest states in the Northeast.
He lambasted the government over the problems that were faced by the teachers, ASHAs workers, MeECL employees and others, which forced them to stage protests. He alleged that the government has invested more in appointments within the Secretariat and in different departments instead of paying the salaries of teachers and other employees.
“Corrupt practices have been witnessed in different projects run by the government and during the COVID-19 period, we had seen that the government has shown a maximum expenditure of more than Rs 800 crore which was not accepted by everyone,” Basaiawmoit said.
