6 killed as truck rams vehicle in Ri-Bhoi

NONGPOH, Feb 26: In a tragic incident, all the occupants of a vehicle were killed after it was hit by a cement-laden truck at Sumer in Ri-Bhoi on Sunday afternoon.
As per sources, the overspeeding truck (WB 41G 7628) was coming from Jowai and was moving towards Guwahati when it lost control and jumped the divider thereby hitting the vehicle coming from the opposite lane.
All six occupants including three male and female each died on the spot. They were from a missionary school based in Bongaigaon, Assam. The deceased have been identified as Fr. Mathew Das, Parish Priest and Principal of St. John’s H.S. School, Barama, Sr. Melagrine Dantes, Sr. Promila Tirkey, Sr. Rossie Nongrum, Mairan (teacher) and the driver.
The Assam Christian Forum has expressed it deep pain at this tragic loss of innocent lives due to reckless driving. The Forum has asked the Meghalaya government for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and due compensation be paid to the victims.
The KJCLF also condoled the tragic loss of lives and called on the authorities to administer immediate relief, support and adequate compensation to the families of the deceased.
