Vigilance team nabs 2 Assam govt employees in bribery case

Guwahati, Feb 28: A team from the Assam directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption laid a trap at the office of the inspector of drugs in Goalpara on Tuesday afternoon and arrested two employees in a bribery case.

“A complaint was received at the vigilance and anti-corruption directorate, alleging that Deepjit Sarkar, the health assistant in conspiracy with Ansar Ali, a Grade IV employee of the same office, had demanded Rs 15,000 as bribe from the complainant in the name of processing the issuance of GPR drug licence of the complainant,” an official statement issued here on Tuesday said.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the directorate for taking legal action against the two public servants.

“Accordingly, a trap was laid at the office of the inspector of drugs in Goalpara following which Sarkar, the health assistant was caught red handed at 2.16 pm immediately after he accepted Rs 10,000 as part of the demanded bribe from the complainant,” the statement said.

The tainted bribe money has been recovered from his possession and seized accordingly in presence of witnesses.

“In the same trap operation, Ansar Ali, the Grade IV employee of the same office was also apprehended for conspiring in the bribery. Subsequently, both the public servants have been arrested by the team after getting sufficient evidence,” it said.

In this connection, a case has been registered in the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) police station vide ACB PS case number 05/2023 under Section 120(B) of IPC, read with 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Sarkar and Ali.

Necessary legal follow-up action is being carried out by the directorate.
