SHILLONG, March 9: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Thursday paid homage to two senior politicians of Meghalaya, HDR Lyngdoh and AH Scott Lyngdoh, who passed away recently.
Participating in the obituary reference during the Special Session on Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma remembered the contributions made by AH Scott Lyngdoh, in the capacity of Finance Minister, to the development of the state.
Conrad said that he saw a father figure in Scott, while recalling how the latter was supportive and helped the former as a young entrepreneur.
The chief minister also recalled the contributions of HDR Lyngdoh towards the development of the state in different capacities.
TMC leader Mukul Sangma, on the other hand, informed the House about HDR Lyngdoh’s contributions for the overall growth and prosperity of the state.
Remembering HDR as a friend, brother and colleague, Mukul said his contributions made in multiple spheres of development will always be remembered.
He also termed AH Scott Lyngdoh a “man of commitment”, and said that even at an age when one would be expected to remain indoors, he was always outdoors, remaining glued to his hobbies and other sporting activities.
Speaker Thomas Sangma, while paying respect to HDR Lyngdoh, recalled that the latter had won the election for the first time in 1988 as an HSPDP candidate and continued till 1998.
“In 1999, he contested the KHADC election as an INC candidate and returned as an MLA in 2003, and continued till 2018 as an INC candidate,” the Speaker said.
Referring to AH Scott Lyngdoh, Thomas said he was a venerable officer of the erstwhile cadre of Indian Frontier Administrative Service (IFAS), who served with distinction in some of the remote places of the Northeast, including Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram, in 50s and 60s.
He said that Scott knew these far-flung areas like the back of his palm and would relish recounting his fascinating experience with endless anecdotes.
Other MLAs who paid tributes to the political veterans include Charles Pyngrope, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, Paul Lyngdoh and Miani D Shira.
The House also observed a two-minute silence in respect of the departed souls.
