Bihar duo arrested in JH, contraband items seized
SHILLONG, March 14: Two people were arrested by police in Jaintia Hills on Tuesday and marijuana weighing 71.476 kg was confiscated from their possession. According to a statement here, acting on a tip-off that two alleged drug suppliers are travelling in a vehicle (AS01AN3312) with suspected contraband concealed from Kalain towards Khliehriat, a naka was set up around 6:15 am jointly by ANTF and Anti-Infiltration Umtyra CP. Following this, the aforesaid vehicle, which was coming from Lumshnong side, was intercepted and two people, viz. Babalu Singh and Yogendra Singh, both residents of Bihar, were apprehended. “Subsequently, a search of the said vehicle was conducted and 117 packets of suspected contraband were found hidden under the rear side of the bumper and rear back light. Preliminary test of the suspected contraband was conducted and showed positive results for Marijuana and weighing 71.476 kgs,” the statement said.
Training on tech innovations in weather forecasting gets underway
SHILLONG, March 14: A three-day training programme on ‘Technologies Innovations in Weather Forecasting, Early Warning and Last Mile Connectivity’ got underway at the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI), Mawdiangdiang, on Tuesday. According to a statement, the training is being organised by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, in collaboration with State Disaster Management Authority, Meghalaya, and aims at imparting training on the fundamental concept of weather forecasting, early warning and last-mile connectivity. “It also aims to acquaint them with the technological innovations being used by agencies, state governments and local bodies to disseminate early warning information of inclement weather and other hydro-meteorological hazards at the community level,” the statement said. The programme is also aimed at making the trainees aware of various guidelines, Acts and provisions of the Centre, and the utilisation of the same. The inaugural programme was attended by Executive Director of SDMA, M War Nongbri, as the chief guest.
Man convicted of minor’s rape
NONGSTOIN, March 14: The Court of the Special Judge (POCSO), West Khasi Hills, has convicted one Agustine Momin alias Rajesh G. Momin for raping a minor in 2020. According to a statement, the convict has been awarded 25 years of rigorous imprisonment and has been imposed a fine of Rs 30,000. He also has been awarded another five years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 5,000. It may be mentioned that the crime was committed in July 2020 following which a case was registered with police. Momin was subsequently arrested under POCSO charges and was tried in court thereafter.
