SHILLONG, March 17: NPP leader and Resulbelpara MLA, Timothy D Shira is all set to be elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly unopposed.
Shira, who had served as the Deputy Speaker even during the last term of the House, had filed his nomination for the election to the post on Friday.
Assembly Secretariat Commissioner and Secretary, Andrew Simons said that none has filed the nomination, except for the NPP legislator from Resulbelpara.
“The election of Deputy Speaker has been listed as one of the businesses on the first day of the Assembly Budget Session on March 20,” Simons said. Meanwhile, Shira said that it is the choice of the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, who had asked him to stay in the same post.
“My priority will be to complete the new Assembly building. We will take every step to see that (next) session of the Assembly is being held in the new building,” he added.
