SHILLONG, March 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday clarified that no bill relating to Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been passed in the Upper House of the Parliament.
Replying to a query by VPP legislator from Mawryngkneng constituency, Heaving Stone Kharpran, Conrad said, “Sir, no bill regarding UCC has been passed by the Rajya Sabha on the said date. The UCC bill 2022 was introduced as a private members bill and it was not introduced by the Government of India. Private members bill are brought in by individuals at their individual level and capacity and so the bill has been brought in.”
“In the list of pending bills in the Rajya Sabha, this one is number 100. So, this bill is there, it  was introduced as a private members bill and that was all,” he added.
Earlier the VPP MLA had claimed that the UCC-related Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha in December last year, while questioning the state government’s stand on the same.
