SHILLONG, March 28: Congress legislator from Mawhati, Charles Marngar on Tuesday urged the state government to expedite the appointment of teachers to the vacant posts in SSA and government lower primary and upper primary schools.
Raising the matter during Question Hour, Marngar said the appointments have been pending for two to three years which has severely crippled the functioning of schools in Ri-Bhoi.
In his reply, Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma attributed the delay in the recruitment process to the Meghalaya High Court order to implement the roster system.
“We will conduct proper recruitment once we are ready with the roster system,” the minister said.
He added that the government has already appointed teachers on a temporary basis in all the 1,200 government lower primary and upper primary schools.
Sangma also disclosed that a number of schools have been detected with very low enrolment.
“There are 903 schools having less than 20 students. As many as 62 upper primary schools have single-digit enrolment and there are some schools with zero enrolment,” the minister added.
