SHILLONG, April 2: The UDP is appreciative of the steps taken by the government to resolve the interstate boundary row with Assam but at the same time it remains steadfast in its stand that the government should re-visit those areas which have encountered problems in recent times.
“Our stand remains that the government should revisit those areas where there are problems. It is not that we do not appreciate the initiatives taken by the government but we feel there is a need to look at the matter from a different approach and we need all stakeholders to be taken on board,” UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said on Sunday.
Talking about the second phase of border talks, he said they want everything to be smooth sailing and if there is a need for “give-and-take” it has to be properly justified and it cannot be one sided.
“Right from the beginning a lot of deliberations, as many as 20 meetings at the level of the chief secretaries and ten meetings at the level of chief ministers happened but it never materialised but the MDA Government took one step by forming the regional committees and the talks moved forward,” Mawthoh said, lauding the efforts of the government.
“However, when there were reactions from the border residents we asked the government to revisit all those areas,” he added.
