NONGPOH, April 5: The Ri-Bhoi Anti Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) team on Wednesday nabbed a drug peddler and seized 20 soap boxes of heroin weighing 191 grams after an intense operation.
The ANTF team had received inputs that the drugs were being transported from Guwahati to Shillong.
Acting on this tip-off, it then initiated surveillance to intercept and detain the suspected peddler.
At circa 1 pm, the ANTF team detained a vehicle (ML 10 A 2089) at Shangbangla under Nongpoh Police Station. Upon conducting a search, 20 soap boxes of suspected illegal contraband were recovered from a person identified as Dipankar Ghosh (35), a resident of Upper Jail Road East, Shillong.
The suspected contraband later was confirmed to be heroin.
The suspect was immediately detained and brought to Nongpoh Police Station, where a criminal case will be taken up against him as per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The Ri-Bhoi Police department has commended the ANTF team for their vigilance and efforts in combating drug trafficking in the region.
