SHILLONG, April 8: Hectic preparations are under way in Shillong in the wake of the Space-20 programme slated for April 17-18.
Meghalaya is set to host a meeting of the G20 nations to deliberate over how space partnerships can contribute to the economies of the countries.
In Shillong, almost all the major roads have been black-topped, while the all-important Guwahati-Shillong Road has been painted with signs and indicators, and even walls have been painted as part of preparations.
Even illumination by streetlights has been improved in many places in the city, especially Mawlai. Nonetheless, many stretches including the portion from Lumdiengjri to Rhino point continue to look dark although few streetlights are functional.
Moreover, few high-mast lights in the area are also non-functional.
The Shillong Airport’s terminal at Umroi is also being painted, while renovation is under way and basic infrastructure also seems to be improved in view of the meeting.
It is learnt that many high-profile guest and top scientists from across the globe would visit Shillong through chartered flights.
The programme here is in continuation of the Space Economy Leaders’ Meeting, held by the National Space Agencies of the G20 countries.
