Shillong, April 10: In connection with its probe into the communal violence on Ram Navami in Bihar, the police have arrested five more persons. These arrests have been made by Economic Offenses Unit (EOU) of the police.
On Sunday, two additional suspects who were connected to various other cases and sought by the EOU in connection with the communal violence in Nalanda turned surrendered before the police. The EOU will now try to get custody of them. Investigators from the EOU are also looking into the surrendered suspect’s potential affiliations.
During Ramnavami celebrations, communal violence erupted in different parts of Bihar. Over a dozen individuals were hurt in Bihar Sharif from miscreants’ stone-throwing and shooting, and about ten stores were destroyed. The violence resulted in one death.
In order to incite enmity among members of various communities, the accused allegedly used WhatsApp groups, according to JS Gangwar, Additional Director General (ADG) of Bihar Police.
Gangwar said “Investigations by the EOU have revealed that the accused had created a WhatsApp group and through that they were spreading hatred among people against different communities. Accused were also instigating people to indulge in spreading fake video messages against different communities. The EOU has also recovered five mobile phones from their possession that are being further scrutinized”.
According to him, the EOU is also pursuing a separate investigation to apprehend people responsible for disseminating fake videos and messages on various social media sites amid communal unrest in Nalanda and Sasaram.
He noted that on April 8 the EOU filed FIR against 15 individuals. The five people who were arrested are listed as suspects.
