SHILLONG, April 10: Under pressure from political parties and pressure groups, the state government has decided to discuss the roster system in the next Cabinet meeting.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday said that the Cabinet will discuss the roster system keeping in view the latest ruling of the High Court of Meghalaya.
“The Cabinet will discuss the issue followed by a meeting of the MDA coalition partners. If necessary we will also call an all-party meeting to discuss the roster system,” Tynsong told reporters here.
Reminded of the demand made by the VPP and KHNAM for a special Assembly session to discuss the roster system, Tynsong said there is no need for a special session since the Cabinet will have a detailed discussion on the subject.
Asked about the demand for “prospective” implementation of the roster system, he said that the state government had filed three affidavits asking the High Court if the roster system can be implemented “prospectively” from the day that Court issued the ruling.
“But the High Court insisted that it should be right from the inception of the reservation policy. It is for this reason that we had to go back to 1972,” Tynsong said.
Asked if the state government would consider the demand for a review of the state reservation policy, he said that the issue at hand pertains to the roster system. “Let us resolve this one first,” he added.
