Locals help ailing Bangladeshi national in GH, man dies later
SHILLONG, April 12: Villagers of Rengrampara under Dalu PS in West Garo Hills on April 6 found an unknown person (18-25 years) suspected to be a Bangladeshi national lying on the road of the village unconscious and brought him to Dalu CHC for medical attention. The attending medical officer referred the person to Tura Civil Hospital for better treatment. However, on April 8, a report was received that the person had succumbed to his ailments at the hospital. After post-mortem and inquest, the body was kept at the morgue of the hospital. Claimants, if any, have been asked to contact Tura Civil Hospital or 6009308862/8837423053 within 72 hours starting April 9. The deceased has an oval face, short and curly hair, is 5-feet tall, medium-built, dark-complexioned and was found wearing blue track pant, pink sweat shirt and a grey t-shirt.

Fine for illegal fishing at Syntu Ksiar goes up to Rs 50,000
JOWAI, April 12: The Jaintia Fishing and Environmental and Protection Association (JFEPA) has decided to increase the fine for any illegal fishing at Syntu Ksiar from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. Talking to reporters, JFEPA president DH Pde said that people will be made to pay the fine of Rs 50,000 if they are caught fishing illegally since Syntu Ksiar has been converted into a sanctuary park. “We are going to spare no one. We have taken this decision in order to protect the cleanliness of Mynta river,” JFEPA president said. According to him, the decision to ban any fishing along the river was also to protect the fish. Also measures have been taken to prevent washing of clothes since it pollutes the river and threatens aquatic life, he said. The association has also urged the residents of Jowai and other localities such as Mustem, Iongnoh and Muphlang to refrain from polluting the Myntdu river. “We need to work together. There are many localities who are getting their potable water from the Myntdu river,” Pde added.

Health dept told to clarify on
area for Bhaitbari CHC
TURA, April 12: The All Meghalaya Minorities Students Union (AMMSU) in West Garo Hills has submitted a petition to the District Medical and Health Officer in Tura, seeking clarification on the size of land donated to the Health department for setting up the Bhaitbari Community Health Centre (CHC). In its petition to the official, the union said that as per the claims of the land donors, a total of 18 bigha of land was donated to the Health department. However, the union added that as per the area in possession for the aforesaid CHC, the quantity seemed to be less than 18 bigha. The union sought that an inquiry be conducted into the matter so that the territory of the CHC can be settled and a boundary wall can be constructed.

Months-long campaign on financial literacy launched
TURA, April 12: As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav 2.0, the District Mission Management Unit, Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS), South Garo Hills, on Wednesday, launched a campaign on ‘Financial Literacy and Digital Finance’ in South Garo Hills. The campaign is set to continue till August 15. SGH Deputy Commissioner, who is also the Chairman of DMMU, in his address during the launch event, shared the importance and objectives of the campaign. He said that the government, through this campaign, aims to reach out to the masses in rural areas and disseminate awareness on finance. The DC also said that the district is in dire need of better banking services since Rongara Block does not have a single bank branch and beneficiaries have to travel miles to Baghmara to avail the same.

MLA inspects site in Ri-Bhoi
for Synod Congregation
NONGPOH, April 12: As part of preparations to host the Synod Congregation in 2024, an inspection of the proposed site at Nongthymmai for the event was conducted on Wednesday by Umsning MLA Dr Celestine Lyngdoh along with church leaders, members of the reception committee, and officers from the PWD, Umsning Division. The Presbyterian Church, Nongthymmai Umsning, will host the Synod congregation in 2024. After the inspection, it was informed that the site is also projected to turn into a football ground in the near future, which necessitates land development and proper road connectivity. Members of the reception committee have expressed their gratitude to the MLA for taking the initiative to conduct the inspection at the site where the synod will be held in 2024. They also urged the PWD to provide better road connectivity to the site and the PHE department to provide water connection as the village is facing acute water supply. With the collective efforts of the MLA and the PWD and PHE departments, the reception committee said that the synod in the village will be hosted in a grand way, and the faithful of the church can attend the congregation without any difficulties.
