SHILLONG, April 14: The state government is contemplating to make Mathematics a compulsory subject at the secondary school level. If the decision is approved, Mathematics will no longer be an optional subject in the SSLC examination.
Informing this here on Friday, Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma said that Mathematics and Science were made optional due to the shortage of teachers in these two subjects.
“In my personal opinion, it is time to review the decision. We will decide on the matter and I think Mathematics should be made a compulsory subject as going for higher studies without Mathematics will lead us nowhere and students will face crisis in future,” he said.
Asserting that providing quality education is the top most priority of the government and there will be no compromise on it, Sangma said that students of the state need to be equipped with knowledge and confidence as they move ahead in life.
“We are also in process of reviewing the MBoSE syllabus to bring it at par with the CBSE system so that our children remain second to none,” the minister said. Asked about the poor infrastructure in government-run schools, he said that the government will float a tender for renovation of 117 LP school buildings. The MDA 2.0 Government will continue the exercise of renovating the schools which was initiated during the tenure of the previous government, he said.
He also requested the MLAs to adopt some schools or keep aside some funds from their MLA schemes for renovation of schools in their respective constituencies.
