SHILLONG, April 14: The Congress on Friday said there may not be any sympathy wave at all in favour of the UDP in the by-elections to the Sohiong seat as its candidate Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah himself was instrumental in ensuring the defeat of his own uncle – the late HDR Lyngdoh – in the 2018 Assembly polls.
Talking to The Shillong Times, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh asked how Thabah is expecting a sympathy wave in his favour when he had gone against his uncle.
The CLP leader said the UDP candidate may try to take advantage by virtue of being the nephew of HDR Lyngdoh and go against the latter when the situation does not suit him but people are smart enough. “I don’t think the sympathy factor will work in Sohiong. On what ground will he ask people to support him when he himself had gone against his own uncle which was possibly one reason why he (HDR Lyngdoh) was defeated?” the Congress leader asked.
According to him, it does create an impact when someone goes against his own uncle.
The Congress, which held a meeting on Friday, formulated its strategy to win the by-poll. Party MLAs and MDCs have been allotted specific areas where they will have to campaign.
Stating that victory in elections depends on campaign, the CLP leader said confidently the Congress will break the trend that by-elections and adjourned polls are won only by parties in the government.
