Guv lauds Labour dept’s initiatives

SHILLONG, May 1: Celebrating the importance of workers all over the world and their immense contribution to society, International Labour Day was observed at Raj Bhavan here on Monday. The programme was organised by the Labour department and Governor Phagu Chauhan graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor lauded the Labour department for prioritising the welfare of labourers. The central government has amended 26 labour laws into four labour codes, namely Code of Wages, Industrial Relations’ Code, Social Security Code and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code. The Governor further added that the government is engaged in registering unorganised workers under e-labour and ensuring that they get benefits from various schemes created specifically for them. Till date, Rs 2.95 lakh beneficiaries have been registered under e-Shram.
Commissioner and Secretary, Labour department, BDR Tiwari, also spoke on the significance of the occasion.
The programme concluded with felicitation of working leaders and distribution of prizes to winners of the drawing competition organised by the department.
Meanwhile, the District Legal Services Authority Baghmara under the Aiges of NALSA Meghalaya observed the “International Labour’s Day at Baghmara on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Labour Inspector Prabakar M Sangma, informed that the Labour department has introduced construction workers’ welfare scheme for the benefit of registered construction workers . He also elaborated in detail the various schemes available such as e-SHRAM, maternity benefits, medical assistance to the beneficiaries, scholarship to children, family pension and other allowances.
