SHILLONG, May 1: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has lashed out at Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong for his recent statement that MLA schemes are meant to benefit only those voters/supporters who support the party/candidate during the election.
Taking strong exception to Tynsong’s remark during an election rally at Sohiong constituency on Saturday last, KHNAM vice president Thomas Passah said his (Deputy CM) remark means that the amount of Rs 12.5 crore awarded to each MLA for five years is a freebie used by politicians for their benefits in gross violations of the guidelines laid down by the Election Commission of India.
Passah stated that the Deputy CM’s remark justifies the demand for the MLA scheme to be done away with. “All development activities should be channelised through the BDO or the district administration to ensure better execution of work, timely completion and accountability. This will also ensure that businessmen are not attracted to politics for personal gains,” he added.
