Shillong, May 7: During the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) six-wicket loss against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Sunil Gavaskar criticised Rohit Sharma for playing a careless shot.

At No. 3, Rohit began to bat but only managed a score of zero before Deepak Chahar claimed his life in the third over. While attempting to play a scoop shot, Rohit got himself into all kinds of trouble, and Ravindra Jadeja made a straightforward catch in front of the short third man.

When Rohit left, MI had lost three wickets in 2.5 overs and were at 14 runs. The MI captain, according to Gavaskar, should have focused before launching spectacular shots.

“It just doesn’t appear like he’s playing. I could be totally wrong, but he didn’t play a captain’s shot. When the team is in danger, the captain repairs the innings, plays a solid knock, and helps the team reach a good total. You are out of form with two wickets lost during the power play, according to Gavaskar.

In the IPL, Rohit also set a questionable record for the most ducks (16). His last four innings’ scores were 2, 3, 0, and 0. Gavaskar added that Rohit might consider taking a break.

“If you are in good form, I still understand the scoop shot, but when you had two ducks in the previous game, it’s a big shot. You want to play, get off to a good start, get your legs moving, run quick ones and twos, and then go for the big ones. He might be distracted, and a brief break might be beneficial. But he and the management of the MI team must make the decision,” he continued.
