SHILLONG, May 8: Leaders and supporters of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) will march to the Secretariat on May 12 to submit a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma demanding a halt to all recruitments in the state until the implementation of the roster system and review of the Meghalaya State Reservation Policy, 1972.
The party has also appealed to the public to accompany VPP MLAs to the Secretariat as a mark of support when they submit the letter to the chief minister.
VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh told reporters on Monday that they will submit the letter to the CM since the state government did not respond to their demand to call a special session of the Assembly to discuss the pros and cons of the roster system and the job reservation policy.
He said that the decision of the government to continue with the recruitment process goes against the interest of the Khasi-Jaintia candidates.
Urging people to maintain peace and avoid any disturbance during the march, the VPP spokesperson said the party will not take any responsibility if there is any untoward incident because of the presence of a large number of people.
Myrboh also made it clear that the VPP would approach the court for redressal only as the last option.
“We want to have a dialogue with the government since the High Court has left the matter to the government, legislature and executive to take a decision,” Myrboh said.
He accused the government of contradicting its own statement by arguing that it would not review the reservation policy and only focus on implementing the roster system.
“If this is the case then why has the government been saying that it will discuss the matter internally and convene an all-party meeting?” Myrboh questioned.
Reacting to the views of a section of pressure groups that the job reservation policy should not be touched since it may attracts the attention of the courts, he said there is massive misunderstanding on the whole issue.
