TURA, May 9: For the first time in a while none from the Garo Hills region stood amongst the top rankers in the just announced HSSLC examination results for the Science and Commerce streams.
A total of 3,635 candidates appeared in the Science stream and 2,866 students passed. The pass percentage was 78.84.
In the Commerce stream, a total of 2,383 students appeared while 1,890 of them passed for a total pass percentage of 79.31. However when one looks at the figures for Garo Hills in both streams, save a few exceptions, the numbers are extremely small to give any one a better idea on where higher secondary is placed now in the region.
The best performing district in Commerce was East Garo Hills which actually topped the state percentage wise though only 67 passed out of a total of 70 appearing. The next best in the same stream was West Garo Hills which saw 254 appear and 168 pass with an overall pass percentage of 66.14. North Garo Hills saw another 21 pass out of 50 that appeared.
There were no Commerce students in South Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills districts. For the Science stream, in West Garo Hills a total 595 students appeared while 405 passed with a pass percentage of 68.07. Similarly 53 out of 101 that appeared in East Garo Hills passed while 10 out of 13 passed in South Garo Hills, 39 out of 67 passed in North Garo Hills and 18 out of 20 passed in South West Garo Hills.
Overall, out of a total of 796 that appeared in the Science from Garo Hills, 525 passed. The overall impact of the numbers showed that only 20.17% contribution in the state was made in the Garo Hills.
