India’s Divya and Sarabjot win mixed team pistol gold
BAKU, May 11: India’s Divya TS and Sarabjot Singh emerged third-time lucky as a pair, winning gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event of the ISSF World Cup here on Thursday.Shooting on competition day two, the Indian pair who had finished fifth in two earlier World Cup stages in Cairo and Bhopal respectively, broke through with a fine 581 to top the 55-team qualification, assuring them of a medal and a spot in the gold medal match.Up against Serbian legends Damir Mikec and Zorana Arunovic in the most important match, the Indians held their own to pull off a nerve-wracking 16-14 win and finish top of the podium.It was a second ISSF World Cup gold for Sarabjot in back-to-back tournaments, having won the individual air pistol in Bhopal in March, while for Divya it was a first senior medal at this level. Ismail Keles and Simal Yilmaz of Turkey won bronze.In qualification, Divya and Sarabjot were detailed in the second relay after India’s second pair Esha Singh and Varun Tomar had shot a combined 578 in the first, placing them third provisionally.After Divya and Sarabjot’s relay however, they finished fifth overall, missing out on a shot at bronze by a point. Three pairs in fact finished on the same score of 581, but Divya and Sarabjot were classified top with 24 inner-10s on their card. (PTI)

Srikanth hires Indonesian coach with Olympics in mind
NEW DELHI, May 11: Keeping the Paris Olympics in mind, star Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth has hired an Indonesian coach to help him ramp up his game in the run-up to next year’s showpiece.The qualification period for the 2024 Olympics began from May 1 and Srikanth, who has been struggling with form, has availed the services of Wiempie Mahardi to help him train.“I have been trying to get a coach since December 2021, when Agus left. Now I have an Indonesian coach Wiempie Nahardi. I met him when I went to Indonesia to train for three weeks. He came to India in last week of April,” former world number one Srikanth said. India are yet to appoint a foreign coach for men’s singles players since the abrupt departure of Indonesia’s Agus Dwi Santoso in December 2021. After PV Sindhu parted ways with Park Tae Sang in February, the Korean has been helping out the men’s singles players. However, Srikanth didn’t get the time to train with his new coach as he participated in the selection trials for the Asian Games. He finished at the top with six wins in as many matches to qualify for the individual events. (PTI)

India U-17 team loses 1-3 against Getafe U-18
NEW DELHI, May 11: India U-17 men’s national team suffered a 1-3 defeat against Getafe U-18s at the Otero de Herreros, Segovia, in their fifth training game in Spain. All the goals came in the first half.Korou Singh had put India ahead in the 12th minute, before Angel Blanco equalised in the 24th. Luis Kawecki put the Spaniards in the lead on the 26th, before an own goal by Pramveer gave them a two goal lead just six minutes before the half-time break. India went looking for the two goals that would put them on level terms once again, but the Getafe defence managed to contain them. With 12 minutes of regulation time left, India head coach Bibiano Fernandes preferred to give more chances to the boys on the bench. (IANS)
