SHILLONG, May 17: The Meghalaya Government has expressed keenness to contribute to Indo-Bangladesh trade relations.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who was paid a courtesy call here by the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, Md. Mustafizur Rahman, on Wednesday, highlighted the possibility of direct import of garments, plastic products, electronic products, processed food and frozen food from Bangladesh.
Conrad also apprised Rahman about the opportunities and possibilities of expanding trade and commerce of Bangladesh in the state of Meghalaya.
Laying emphasis on strengthening mutual partnership in the global value chain and diversification of products, Conrad sought Bangladesh’s cooperation in developing and flourishing Meghalaya’s tourism industry.
The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, on the other hand, referred to Bangladesh’s historical relationship with Meghalaya and emphasised the need to enhance connectivity and increase people-to-people interactions.
Informing that the governments of India and Bangladesh are working in tandem to promote connectivity with the Northeastern states by road, rail and river, Rahman highlighted the willingness of the Government of Bangladesh to boost trade ties with the Northeastern part of India.
Mentioning that the investors of Meghalaya have ample opportunity to invest in different sectors of Bangladesh, Rahman also drew the chief minister’s attention to the reopening of the closed land customs stations at the international border areas.
Earlier, the Bangladesh High Commissioner held a meeting with the Industries & Trade Fair Association of Assam in Guwahati.
During his trip, Rahman will also visit several land customs stations along the border and hold meetings with the business communities and trade representatives at Dawki and Tamabil in Meghalaya.
