SHILLONG, May 19: In the wake of the recent skirmish at Khanduli village, Members of Khasi community living in Assam have called on Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, seeking peace and tranquility in the interstate border areas, especially in Khanduli.
Members of the Khasi community, under the banner of United Khasi People’s Organisation (UKPO), Karbi Anglong Central Committee, recently visited the Secretariat here and held interaction with the deputy chief minister.
During the meeting, the delegation, which was led by the UKPO president Pynshngainlang Rattane, was assured by the deputy chief minister that peace would soon be maintained at the Assam-Meghalaya border areas.
It may be mentioned that the organisation on Wednesday also paid a visit to Khanduli and held discussions with the village leaders, church elders, et al, for immediate restoration of peace.
“Miscreants often enter the Assam-Meghalaya border and disrupt peace in the border areas by engaging in anti-social acts, which should be stopped immediately. The Khasi people not only live in the border area but have also been living within the Assam territory of Karbi Anglong since the 18th century. Karbi and Khasi have been living together as brothers and sisters since the era of their ancestors until today. They live together and share meals without any partiality. The relationship maintained between us has been very satisfying, and we live together peacefully without any narrow-mindedness, sharing what we have,” the organisation said.
The UPKO has, meanwhile, appealed to the Government of Meghalaya, border residents, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to ensure peace and tranquility at the interstate border areas.
“We have been here since the 18th century. We want a peaceful situation along the inter-state boundary so that all sections of people can coexist,” said Rattane.
