NONGPOH, May 19: Minister in-charge of Textiles department Paul Lyngdoh has expressed hope that the Integrated Textile Tourism Complex in Nongpoh, the construction of which is under way, will play a pivotal role in transforming Meghalaya into a major hub for textile production, contribute to economic growth and create employment opportunities once it is up and running.
He said this after inspecting the project on Thursday.
Accompanied by Secretary, Textiles department, C Kharkongor, and other officials, the minister expressed satisfaction with the work progress and outlined plans to secure additional funds for its completion.
Lyngdoh announced his intention to pursue the early release of the second installment of funds from the Ministry of Textiles. This financial support, he said, is vital for the timely completion of the Integrated Textile Tourism Complex.
During the visit, the inspection team also recommended the demolition of the RCC building for the Common Facilities Centre as it obstructed the facade of the Integrated Textile Tourism Complex.
It may be mentioned that the Integrated Textile Tourism Complex has been funded by the Development Commissioner (Handicraft), Ministry of Textiles, under the North Eastern Region Textile Promotion Scheme (NERTPS). Out of the total cost of Rs 798.92 lakh, Rs 399.46 lakh has already been released.
