SHILLONG, May 23: A group of employees of the state government-run hotels have expressed anguish over the non-compliance with the rules of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation. “The government owned hotels do not seem like they are run by the government but it somehow looks like it is run by a private sector where all the rules and regulations are made and defined by one person only,” said an employee of a government-run hotel, who wished anonymity.
The employee said the rules of the corporation are not even applied to the staff working under it.
The rules will be modified and compromised for the benefit of this single entity, it was alleged.
Pointing out that in the year 2018, an article came up stating that services of retired personnel cannot be extended on contract basis since there has to be an opening for others, the employee claimed that on the same lines, action has been taken by the management to remove 4 to 5 employees.
The employee, however, claimed that this has been sidelined in 2023.
“While four staff retired in 2023, services of one (head of the department) have been extended on contract basis and still sitting on the same post withdrawing the same salary after retirement. This shows the negligence of the management,” the employee said. “Also, this one person is sitting in a post which does not even exist and on what basis is this post given to this concerned person”.
The employee alleged that the service rule of the department has been drafted and made according to the convenience and benefit of the head of the department.
Another employee flagged the “misuse” of power in the MTDC.
“Till date, it looks like the department is bearing all the expenses and maintenance which is being done in his private home,” the staff added.
