MAWKYRWAT, May 30: A six-month-old baby sustained burn injuries in a house fire incident at Nonglynkien village, 15 km from Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills, on Tuesday morning.
According to the locals, the fire broke out at a time when the baby’s father was not at home while the mother was washing clothes in a pond nearby.
The baby, on the other hand, was asleep in a bed at home.  When the fire was caught, none from Nonglynkien village initially noticed it, but fortunately a man from Mawkhew village saw the smoke and alerted the people nearby. The people then rushed to the house and rescued the baby.
The baby was rushed to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital for treatment, and is now in a stable condition.
The house belongs to Sporlanding Lyngkhoi and Banylla Sangriang. The cause of the fire was short circuit, the locals said.
